Family words are important to be able to describe relationships, and are central to a child’s world. This makes learning family vocabulary in Spanish, an important theme for Preschool and Kindergarteners! Let’s take a tour of this family vocabulary pack loaded with resources!
Different languages and cultures use various titles for family members, but we narrowed it down to the two most common versions in both Spanish and English: Casual and Formal. This vocabulary pack focuses on 12 words. The casual version is listed below with the (formal version in parenthesis).
- dad (father) – el papá (padre)
- mom (mother) – la mamá (madre)
- brother – el hermano
- sister – la hermana
- baby – el {la} bebé
- siblings – los hermanos
- uncle – el tío
- aunt – la tía
- cousin – el primo
- parents – los papás (padres)
- grandpa (grandfather) – el abuelo
- grandma (grandmother) – la abuela
What’s included in the La Familia Vocabulary Pack?
1. La Familia Dictionary Pages
Use them to make your own Picture Dictionary to use to support emergent writers, or as a place to review vocabulary.
2. La Familia Flashcards
These work great for all sorts of phonemic awareness games – sort them by number of syllables, sort by beginning sounds, find rhyming words, etc.
We printed off two copies, and played a Memory-style game. To add more vocabulary practice you could add any of the following prompts:
- “Quien es ella?” and child answers “Ella es (la mamá, la abuela, la hermana, la tía).”
- “Quien es él?” and child answers “Él es (el papá, el abuelo, el hermano, el tío, el bebé, el primo).”
- “Quienes son ellos?” and child answers “Ellos son (los papás, los hermanos).”
3. La Familia Word Wall Cards
These come in two versions, one you see above and one with lines to separate the graphics from the words in case you didn’t want a picture cue on your pocket chart cards. Use these to build sentences in pocket charts, add to your word wall, or put each theme on a ring to use in the writing center.
4. La Familia Mini-Book with QR Code
The family-themed Spanish emergent reader uses the repetitive text “El/ella es mi ____ .” Children can use any QR code reader to scan the code on the front cover, which connects to a Google Drive video of the mini-book being read. This is a great way to support learning at home, as well as Spanish pronunciation.
5. La Familia Song with QR Code
Children will love to sing along with “Finger Family” with images to match the text because it features a QR code in the corner. When scanned with any QR code reader, it connects to a YouTube video created with SafeShare. This means children are not able to see or access any recommended videos, or any other links in YouTube…ONLY the song chosen. This is one of the only ways I have found to truly watch YouTube content in a “safe” way.
6. La Familia Word Work
Includes:
- Family-themed Trace and Match
- Family-themed Box-It Word Puzzle (sample shown above)
- Family-themed Cut and Paste Articles
- Family-themed ABC Order
- Family-themed Syllable Sorting
- Family-themed Concept Sorting (sort by male/female, long hair/short hair, etc.)
7. La Familia Writing Prompts
Includes:
- Four Family-themed “How to” prompts for informational writing
- Three Family-themed “word bank” prompts with sentence starters (sample shown above)
- Two blank Family-themed draw and journal pages with a checklist at the bottom
8. La Familia Zip Around (or I Have, Who Has)
This is a fun activity for 2-12 people. You can use it as a whole group game to practice oral language skills, adjective placement, verb conjugation of has/have, and more!
9. La Familia Bingo
There are 9 squares per Bingo card. Set 1 (10 cards) features just images, with the choice of printing them in Color or Black/White. Set 2 (10 cards) features only words for a more challenging version of the game. Using both the picture and word sets would give you a total of 20 different BINGO cards.

Dear Jana,
I am an elementary school Spanish teacher looking for activities to post on my school website for my students while they are working from home. When I buy your Familia package, am I given online access to everything? There are no physical materials sent to me, correct?
I apologize if this is a silly question. Thank you for your help.
No silly questions Mary! Yes, you should receive a receipt immediately after purchase with the download link. Let me know if you need any help with getting your students connected with the materials in this time of distance learning. We are happy to help however we can!
I am looking forward to using this for my family unit
