Can you Relate?
You're a Spanish Preschool Teacher...
You want to be able to prepare your students for Kindergarten, but finding the resources to do that has been tough! You don't just need resources translated into Spanish, you need a way to teach them all the Pre-Reading Skills they need to learn IN SPANISH. Right now, you are having a hard enough time just getting their attention. If only you could find a way to engage them and {GASP} have them actually begging to learn more.
You're a Dual Immersion Kindergarten Teacher...
It's the first day of school! A group of excited children, sporting brand new backpacks that are bigger than they are, come filing into your classroom. Here's the catch...they only speak English. Your job is to have them reading in Spanish by the time the year is over! Where in the world do you start?
You're a Homeschool Mom...
You may not be that classroom teacher, but the truth is, you wish that was YOUR child who will be reading in Spanish soon. Your heart's desire is for your children to be bilingual, but to teach them yourself seems impossible. Your Spanish is more rusty than the tin man!
You're a Latina Mama passionate about Spanish...
You love Spanish language and culture, and refuse to let it be lost with the next generation! The problem is your lives are SO BUSY that you will have to squeeze in Spanish after school and on the weekends. You want learning a language to be something they enjoy, and the workbooks you see in the stores are just not going to cut it. If only you had an exciting, playful way to approach Spanish.
Our Story
As a Kindergarten teacher, I wanted the best for my students.
I spent my evenings and weekends sitting on the floor of the Teacher Store devouring resource books. (Yes folks, all we had were real paper books when I started this gig!) I also spent WAY too much of my paycheck on programs that were "not in the budget.”

If something would give one of my Kinder babies "that lightbulb moment," it was worth a try.
With my teaching toolbox full and more years of experience under my belt, I finally felt comfortable teaching children how to read in English. I had found my groove.
Fast forward 15 years and 5 children later, and my groove migrated all the way to South America. Like any mom, I want the absolute best for my children! For our homeschooling family, that means making sure our children are fluent in both English and Spanish.
I started my Spanish journey in my late teens, and it was painful and downright embarrassing through much of the process. I don’t want my children to suffer learning a second language the hard way, so I am passionate about teaching them to read and write in Spanish from an early age.

I was back to square one, googling “how to teach your child to read in Spanish.” What popped up at the time made me want to cry. Programs that were a few HUNDRED dollars out of my league, and a handful of affordable textbooks that I knew wouldn’t appeal to my children.
In a state of overwhelming disappointment, I started venting to my husband. “All I need this school year is a fun, engaging way to get our children learning the letter sounds in Spanish!”
I rattled off some more ideas and desires based on all the research I had been doing. Then like a knight in shining armor (who just happens to be an awesome graphic designer) he said, “It sounds like you know what you want…so why don’t WE create it?” That’s just what we did.
Introducing . . . Alfa Animales!

Every letter of the Spanish alphabet is symbolized by a unique animal native to Latin America. All 21 Spanish speaking countries are represented!

Each animal was professionally illustrated to form the letter with their body. This is an instant mneumonic device for children!

Every animal has an ASL sign associated with it. By incorporating sign language in the movements, children are learning a third language!

Most animal names were chosen to match the gender of the article. For example, Bela ~ la bellena, Zaqui ~ el zorrillo.

Integrating subjects has never been easier! Children can learn about Latin American culture, and animal adaptations, while learning their alphabet sounds!

This multi-sensory method of learning... Seeing the animal shaped like the letter, hearing the sound, doing the motion while saying the sound…is the perfect recipe for success!
How do Alfa Animales Work?

1.
Meet the animal...
Children are shown the animal card, and told a little story to introduce them to the motions. "Pablo is a three toed sloth, and is the slowest of all mammals. He can walk and swim, but he spends most of his life sleeping high up in the rainforest canopy. To make the sign for Pablo, make a sign language three with each hand. Slowly put one hand over the other like a sloth climbing a tree." (These stories are included in all packages in both English and Spanish. A video verion is coming soon!)
2.
Learn the motions...
Practice the ASL motions that go along with the animal, while saying the letter sound the animal makes. This is multisensory learning at it's finest!
3.
See the letter...
Once children are familiar with the animal names and sounds, you can flip the card over to show the animal superimposed on the letter.
4.
Celebrate their success!
With their animal friends leading the way, children can easily learn the Spanish alphabet in just a couple of weeks!

Alfa Animales have made it a joy to start our school day! As soon as I turn on the video, the children run to the table to watch and sign along. After the video they grab their binders (with the downloadable activities), and choose a page to do for morning work. The biggest problem we have now is getting them to STOP and switch activities!

My children are 5 and 3, and I had no idea where to start with teaching them to read in Spanish. After watching the video a few times they were already copying the motions, and even my youngest was picking up on the Spanish letter sounds. I couldn't believe it!

Finding time to fit everything in the day is very challenging. I love that with Alfa Animales, I can integrate science and math with our alphabet lessons. Their spelling is much more lively also, as they are saying the animal names as they write down letters. As long as they are connecting the sounds to the letter, it doesn't bother me a bit. My students absolutely LOVE the animals!
